Don Luhman, 95

In Loving Memory to Dad, Grandpa, Great Grandpa and Great, Great Grandpa

Donald L. Luhman 95 years young from Rosebud, MT passed away peacefully on Tuesday, November 15, 2022 at the Rosebud County Community Hospital.

Don was born the eldest son on October 22, 1927 in Shell, WY to parents Walter and Erna (Watson) Luhman. In 1929 his parents moved back to Thurlow, MT where Donald attended grade school.

In 1936 his parents bought a small undeveloped farm on the east edge of Rosebud, MT and they lived in a log cabin for a few years before high waters from the Yellowstone took it down the river. At the age of 12 years his parents bought more land which included a house in which Don lived for the rest of his life. His father died young, and Donald took over the homestead. He worked the farm/ranch all his life. In the early years he delivered milk on the side and worked at a coal mine on the north side of the river. In the later years he would grow alfalfa, corn silage and for a few years sugar beets. He took great care of his cattle and would talk to them when he was feeding them their hay bales in the winter months. His 6 children also learned how to drive with the old International truck as he pitched out hay to the cattle. Later in life he worked as a mechanic on the night shift at the Colstrip Mine. He had the honor of getting “The Farmer of the Year Award”, was chairman of the Rosebud School Board for some years and was the ASCS Chairman out of Forsyth.

Don met his wife Mary (from Ashland) in Rosebud and they were married two years later in 1949 in Sheridan, WY.

For many years Don and wife Mary would visit their friends and play cards. They also bowled for a few years.

After retiring, Don enjoyed keeping up with the news, watching football and golf on TV. He also loved visiting with his family to whom he was devoted. He was fond of his car drives around Rosebud, out to Butte Creek, up the Rosebud Creek and across the river.

He loved to watch the many Canada geese in the field from the house.

Don taught many of his grandchildren to drive on the little blue Ford tractor. Don’s grandchildren also enjoyed being pulled behind the tractor on a car hood in the winter months.

Don is survived by his wife of 73 years – Mary, six children – Thelma Beals (Bus), Donna Ives, Dirk Luhman (Sandy), Kirk Luhman, Will Luhman (Ona), Tammy Luhman (Clyde) and half-brother Duane Ingle (Jennie), 11 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren and 5 great, great grandchildren.

Don was preceded in death by his parents Walter & Erna Luhman, Brother Fred Luhman, Sisters June (Les) Fedderson & Loretta “Babe” (Allen) Timberman.

Per Don’s wishes cremation has taken place. A “Celebration of Life” will take place at a later date.
