Betty Lou (Smith) Quale, 86

Betty Lou (Smith) Quale passed away on June 3,2022 due to complications following surgery.

Betty was the eldest of three children born to Edward F. and Esther O. Smith. She was born on March 13, 1936 in Glasgow, Montana. When Betty was a young girl, the family moved to Sidney, Montana. Betty was raised and educated in Sidney, and graduated from Sidney High School in 1955.

Soon after high school, Betty met the love of her life, Conrad E. Quale. They were married on March 8, 1957. Together they had five children: Donna, Dale, Karen, Carol, and Kimberly. In 1959, the family moved to Brigham City, UT when Conrad accepted a job there.

Betty dedicated her life to raising her children and being a wife and homemaker. She was active in many church activities and taught Sunday school, Vacation Bible School, and several Bible study groups throughout the years. She also taught pre-school for a few years with her dear friend Fran, and always enjoyed having children around her.

She had a lifelong love of music and shared her beautiful voice with us whenever the opportunity to do so was presented. Betty and her sister Mary Lee often sang harmonious duets together in church throughout the years, and sometimes their brother Bob would join in. The times of singing with her siblings were among her favorite memories to recall later in her life. She had a voice that had a vibrato that could fill a room and overflow the hearts of those who heard her sing.

After Cons retired, Con and Betty moved back to Montana where they resided in both Wibaux and Forsyth, at various times. In the spring of 2016, Con and Betty moved to Tigard, OR to be closer to family. Con passed away in May of 2017, just a few months after he and Betty celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary.

Betty was a warm person with a warm and welcoming smile. She was always willing to lend an ear and help others as she could. Her children and grandchildren can all recall moments spent snuggling with her and laughing and crying together through life’s twists and turns. She had a hearty laugh and loved to tease Con about his “corny jokes”.

Betty is survived by her sister, Mary Lee Mantz of Forsyth, MT, her children Donna R. Gouwens (and husband, Ray, deceased) of Tyler, UT, Dale E. Quale (and wife, Yvette) of Waldport, OR, Karen L. Quale, of Brigham City, UT, Carol A. Quale of Tigard, OR, and Kimberly K. Krikorian (and husband, Michael) of Portland, OR. She is also survived by her grandchildren Don, Eric, Nora, Shadow, Dustin, Zachery, Alyssa, Tony, and Jonah, 24 greatgrandchildren, and 3 great-great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother, and her husband.

The family will have a virtual memorial service on June 18, 2022. Please email if you would like to attend . She will be laid to rest alongside her husband in Wibaux, MT.
